Colour the World

As a 4th-year game design student at Sheridan College, students are tasked with creating a team with others and have the entire year to create a brand new game. This is done to emulate the industry game design process from start to finish, this also allows students to receive a well-crafted portfolio piece.

The first few weeks of the year, teams are tasked to create and pitch game ideas to their team members. I had a concept that I created in my first year of the program that got put on the back burner. After my team had some struggles determining what game to create, I took it upon myself to revisit some of my older ideas and re-work them to better suit my team.

My Role

After my team agreed to use my concept, I became the Lead Game Designer on the project because the concept was mine to begin with. I always believed that I would work more in the art department of game design, but working on this game has shown me that I can create games that other designers love and are excited to see the game come to life.

Although I am the lead game designer, that does not mean that I only wear that hat. I also work in the art, level design, narrative and production departments of the game. Once my work is done, I will do my best to help wherever I can.

I designed the final logo for both the game and our team, as well as designed some images that were used for cutscenes that are found within the game. I also wrote the narrative for the game and planned out all cutscenes that would be present within the verticle slice/ demo. Once the art for the cutscenes was done, I gathered all the audio and edited the video together.

Current Status

The original game was pitched as a single-player game that used light as the main mechanic, and now the game is a 2-player co-op experience that uses paint as the main mechanic.

I am happy to announce that Colour the World will be presented live at XP Game Developer Summit 2022! The game has grown much since then and the team and I couldn’t be happier.
